Course Title

B1058

BSC/BACHELOR OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AND SURGERY

Veterinary Science (BVMS, BSc)

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences

Qualification:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Veterinary Biology
Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS)

Availability:
Murdoch campus (internal)

Restriction:
Enrolment in this course is subject to restriction.

Duration:
5 years full-time after at least one year full-time or equivalent of general science

Veterinary Science is a major health profession with its own system of education, registration, organisation and ethics. Veterinarians are highly trained in skills of diagnosing, treating and preventing health problems in pets, domestic livestock, wildlife and laboratory animals. Additional areas of interest for veterinarians are increasing the productivity of healthy animals and maintaining standards of food production, animal research and public health.

This five-year course of study leads to a registrable professional qualification in veterinary medicine. A degree of Bachelor of Science is awarded after the successful completion of the first part of the course and is a prerequisite for entry to the final part of the course that leads to the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS).

There is an entry quota.

Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings:
Students will be admitted into the five-year veterinary course after completion of one year of tertiary study, which will include some prerequisite units. High ranking school-leavers selected for Veterinary Science will be guaranteed a place provided they pass the first year of tertiary study at Murdoch University. Prerequisite units are shown at the beginning of the structure.

Selected local and interstate non-school leaver applicants who have completed the science prerequisites will be offered entry directly into the veterinary course.

English competence.

Special Requirements:
Veterinary Science is an animal-based course. Students are required to participate in practical work involving living and dead animals and/or tissue from animals throughout the course.

Professional Recognition:
Graduates are eligible for registration to practice veterinary medicine without further examination in Australia and a number of other countries including Great Britain, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong. The degrees are also recognised by the American Veterinary Medical Association which, after passing the appropriate National or State licensing examinations, makes Murdoch graduates eligible to practice in the USA and Canada.

Veterinary Biology (BSc)

The Veterinary Biology degree encompasses both normal and abnormal aspects of vertebrate structure and function. The first year comprises six units which cover animal development, structure, function and metabolism. The second year also comprises six units which cover general aspects of the causes and nature of disease and its control.

A degree of Bachelor of Science is awarded after successful completion of two and a half years of Part II studies. It is a basis for an extra 'sidestep' year of research work in some aspect of veterinary biology, leading to an honours degree. However, it is expected that most students will proceed directly into fourth and fifth year to complete the BVMS in the minimum time.

The latter years are directed towards the acquisition of knowledge and skills required to diagnose, prevent and treat disease in animals and to optimise animal health and productivity.

Waardong

Waardong provides special entry and academic, social and cultural support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Veterinary Science.

For further information, see the Waardong entry in the University Access Courses section of the Handbook.

Additional Academic Progress Requirements

Waardong

Progress of Waardong students will be assessed by the Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Special Education Officer and the Chair of the Waardong Committee.

Bachelor of Science - Veterinary Entry

Students must successfully complete all units in this course to be eligible for guaranteed progression to the five-year veterinary course (BVMS).

Veterinary Science (BVMS, BSc)

Students may fail no more than one unit in each year of the course. Students who fail more than one unit in any year will be excluded from the course.

A fail in any unit means that the unit will need to be repeated in the following year. Students may apply to the Academic Chair for permission to enrol in one or two units from the following year so as to maintain a balanced load. This permission is not automatic and will depend upon the prerequisite requirements of individual units. Any such student may not progress to the next year until all units in the current year have been successfully completed nor will they be given permission to overload. Progression to the next year will take place at the beginning of any academic year.

Students in the BSc in Veterinary Biology who withdraw from a unit, for whatever reason, will be required to pass that unit, and complete the year, before undertaking the following year of study.

Students who are exempt from units that require animal handling shall, for safety reasons, be required to sit and pass a practical examination in animal handling.

Should the number of students successfully completing the BSc Veterinary Biology course in any one year exceed the entry quota for the Applied Veterinary Medicine course, preference for entry will be given to those students who have completed the BSc Veterinary Biology course in the shortest time span.

The Academic Chair will consider students in Veterinary Science who have failed the additional academic progress rules and will determine where the rules are to be applied. Details for all students who are in breach of these progress rules will be tabled at Board of Examiners.

Students should ensure they are familiar with the University's internal legislation, including provisions specifically relevant to their studies. See the University Regulations and Rules.

Cancellation of Courses, Minors and Units
The University reserves the right to cancel, without notice, any course, major, minor or unit if the number of students enrolled falls below limits set by the University.
