Koort Mooditj (Strong Heart): Pre-Nursing for Indigenous Students is an intensive four-week course which commences at the beginning of each year. The course is designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the School of Nursing. Successful graduates are guaranteed a place in first year of the Bachelor of Nursing.

Students will develop strategies and techniques to handle the pressures and routines of nursing studies. The course will also place an emphasis on university study skills, including nursing research and writing skills. Teaching activities will include lectures by staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery on nursing knowledge, communication skills, science knowledge, problem solving and health mathematics. Staff from the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre and distinguished guests will also teach into the unit.

A daily teaching focus will be on small group tutorials, clinical and science laboratories.

Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings:
Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and must be at least 17 years of age on commencement of the course. Applicants must have adequate literacy and numeracy skills to deal with the course material. Mature-age people are actively encouraged to apply.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery reserves the right to request recognised proof of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity.
