This course is designed for qualified primary teachers who wish to make early childhood education one of their recognised specialisations. It specifically addresses the early childhood years K to 3.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings:
Recognised Bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent training. Students who are not qualified teachers but have had at least two years of full-time recent, relevant and satisfactory teaching experience may seek admission to the Certificate, but should note that the course does not constitute an initial teaching qualification.
English competence.
Internet access is required for students studying externally; exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Special Requirements:
Placement in the practicum component of the Graduate Certificate will require that students obtain Police Clearance through the WA Department of Education. Students should refer to the Study at Murdoch section of this Handbook for details on this essential requirement. Under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, compulsory criminal record checks are required for people working with children. These checks are a national check to identify those who have a criminal history which indicates they may harm children. The appropriate application form is available from the School Experience Office or the WA Department of Education web site. Federal and state police clearances obtained through police stations are not acceptable.
Further study:
The Certificate may be upgraded with a further 12 points to a Graduate Diploma in Education Studies.
Exemption from Postgraduate Coursework Regulations:
In this course, where appropriate, undergraduate units (between 100- and 400-level) have been included to meet the learning outcomes for the entire course. Postgraduate students can expect to be part of a learning community with undergraduate students in these units. This course has been granted a specific exemption from the Postgraduate Coursework Regulations.
