Qualification:
Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Secondary Teaching
Availability:
Murdoch campus (internal)
Some units may also be available in the following locations and attendance modes:
Rockingham campus (internal)
Murdoch campus (external) (except for school experiences)
Restriction:
Enrolment in this course is subject to restriction.
Duration:
2 years full-time commencing in summer term or part-time equivalent
This course provides the opportunity for suitably qualified graduate students to complete a Bachelor of Education in two years. Opportunities to study part-time or externally are available.
Students should note that both internal and external Bachelor of Education (Graduate) students take EDU1011 Introduction to Teaching in the Summer option, which is an intensive 3-point version held on campus in the four-week period immediately prior to the commencement of Semester 1. All students (including External students) must undertake the first School Experience unit in a Perth metropolitan school under the guidance of a Murdoch University supervisor.
Employment Prospects:
Employment prospects are strong for graduates who are unrestricted in the location in which they wish to teach, i.e. graduates wishing to teach in rural and remote locations have high employment prospects with prospects more limited in metropolitan schools but generally strong overall.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings:
An undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline.
Applicants should have completed undergraduate studies relevant to one of the following learning areas in secondary schools: English, Drama, Media, Society and Environment, Science, Mathematics, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) or English as a Second Language (ESL).
International students demonstrating English competence via IELTS need a score of 7.0, with no individual band less than 7.0.
Internet access is required for students studying externally; exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Special Requirements:
The WA Department of Education and cooperating non-government schools have the right to determine 'fit and proper persons' to enter and practice in schools. Therefore, a current WA Department of Education Criminal Record check is required. Under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, compulsory criminal record checks are required for people working with children. These checks are a national check to identify those who have a criminal history which indicates they may harm children. The appropriate application form is available from the School Experience Office or the WA Department of Education web site. Federal and state police clearances obtained through police stations are not acceptable. Students should refer to the Study at Murdoch section of this Handbook for details on this important matter.
Students with undergraduate degrees from non-English speaking environments should note that registration as a teacher in WA requires English language competence to be demonstrated. This requirement is administered by the Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT). Affected students are advised to contact WACOT for further details
Not all required units in these majors are offered completely externally. Some are offered as short-term sessions on-campus or in Perth metropolitan schools. External students must undertake the first School Experience unit in a Perth metropolitan school and under the guidance of a Murdoch University Supervisor. Subject to satisfactory completion of this unit, students may negotiate with the School Experience Office to complete their subsequent school experience elsewhere.
Professional internship units form an integral part of all Murdoch University initial teaching qualifications. For this reason the University coordinates professional internship placement into schools which meet the requirements of a general teaching experience. All professional internship unit placements must meet this requirement.
