Description This course supports students to develop professional competence in counselling specialising in Creative Arts Therapies. The course is committed to experiential learning with an emphasis on the person-centred theoretical framework, and the use of creative arts as a therapeutic modality. The experiential seminar approach will require the making of and engagement in creative arts modalities. A critical appraisal of art therapy and counselling literature combined with applied learning will provide students with the opportunity to develop a foundation in both theoretical knowledge and elementary hands-on art therapy and counselling skills.
Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies may apply for admission to the Masters of Counselling and will be exempt from the units already completed which are common to both degrees.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings Completion of a bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) or equivalent in any discipline. The admission process includes both application and interview.

Course Learning Outcomes Introductory Statement:
This course supports students in developing comprehensive professional knowledge in core areas in the fields of counselling and creative arts therapies. It builds the theoretical foundations towards professional practice and offers professionals in related fields a considerable extension of skills and experience related to the application of counselling based on the person-centred theoretical framework. The training combines theoretical and experiential learning within experiential seminars using creative arts modalities and will fully articulate into the planned Master of Creative Arts Therapies training, and with the existing Master of Counselling. This course is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association.
Understand theoretical and practical principles of Counselling and Creative Arts Therapies and develop the ability to critically think about theory and practice by:
§ Demonstrating and applying knowledge, principles and concepts of art therapy and counselling practice;
§ recognising how the legislative and professional frameworks impact on art therapy and counselling practice and health care; and
§ recognising how counselling plays an essential role in society and the promotion of health and well being, and how creative arts therapies specifically can promote health and wellbeing with some groups of clients such as children.
Possess skills within a professional and ethical framework evidenced by:
§ Conducting a comprehensive case conceptualisation through comprehensive and yet integrative assessment based on sound research evidence;
§ establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationships;
§ demonstrating a foundational set of reflective, clinical and critical thinking skills in counselling in relation to a broad set of client problems;
§ demonstrating a foundational set of skills related to the engagement with and the use of creative arts in therapy;
§ application of case-based theoretical knowledge that forms the base for extended learning of clinical skills; and
§ synthesising and evaluating information from a range of sources.
Bring knowledge of counselling and art therapy into their field of employment by:
§ Understanding principles for effective art therapy and counselling practice in the context of interdisciplinary teams in a range of counselling settings as the premise for delivering quality client-centred counselling services;
§ participating in ongoing professional development;
§ communicating appropriately an understanding of client-related and process-based information, and their implication in terms of intervention choices and outcomes;
§ presenting knowledge and information, and articulating arguments and conclusions, in a variety of
art therapy and counselling modes, to diverse audiences, and for a range of purposes that include assessment, treatment, education and research.

Take personal, professional and social responsibility by:
§ recognising and adhere by the relevant and required ethical conduct and behaviour within which Counselling is practised;
§ recognising and attending to personal development as a critical aspect of sound clinical practice;
§ working responsibly and safely whilst demonstrating a capacity for self-directed learning;
§ understanding and being able to articulate aspects of the place and importance of the Creative Arts in Counselling in the local and global community.
Employment Prospects The Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies provides the opportunity for people to add core counselling knowledge and skills, along with specific expertise in creative arts therapies to existing professional roles in health, education and social services. People with an existing practice in mental health fields can enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies to further develop their skills.
Professional Recognition Graduates will be eligible to register with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) as a Level 1 Clinician.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
