Description This course provides a sound understanding of food security, including international frameworks in which food trade operates, and the drivers behind food security. Using case studies, students will explore biosecurity and food policies that underpin food security and trade in a global context. Students will investigate the concept of producing, protecting and providing food, to ensure sustainable food production for present and future generations. The dissertation provides an opportunity for in-depth analysis of an issue of relevance to food security.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings Completion of the Graduate Certificate or Diploma in Plant Biosecurity or an equivalent AQF Level 8 qualification, including honours, in the plant, ecological, environmental or animal sciences. Students with a Bachelor's degree in the plant, ecological, environmental or animal sciences with at least three years of relevant work experience are also eligible for admission as determined by the Academic Chair.

Students demonstrating English competence via IELTS need an overall score of 6.5 with no individual band less than 6.0 or equivalent proficiency test. Students that undertake Engiish for Academic Purposes (EAP) will still be required to sit a proficiency test.
Special Requirements Some units may be delivered in intensive mode. Internet access is required for all students.

* have a broad understanding of the agronomic, environmental, socio-political and economic factors that impact upon food security
* appreciate the food value chain, and the complexities that exist between global food production and agricultural markets and trade
* understand the contribution to food losses from pests and diseases
* be competent in constructing logically sound arguments
* be skilled in the critical interpretation, presentation and analysis of data
* be able to carry out independent research (either practical or desk-based) and produce reports of the research in a number of different formats (both written and verbal)
have expertise in at least one specialist area of relevance to food security
Employment Prospects Graduates will be able to pursue careers in fields such as agriculture and international development, acting in policy, technical, research and administrative roles, with organisations such as the State Departments of Agriculture, State and Federal Agriculture or Development Agencies, and private industry, or their international counterparts.
Professional Recognition Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership to societies such as the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and the Australian Society of Horticultural Sciences.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
