Description This course is a professional qualification in Information Technology, designed to provide candidates with appropriate practical understanding, skills and knowledge for managing IT use, change and development. The primary aim is to allow IT professionals the opportunity for professional upgrading or an extension of their qualifications and experience.

The degree may be completed in one of two ways:
a) Coursework: students complete 48 credit points of advanced graduate-level units.
b) Coursework and Dissertation: students complete 36 credit points of coursework units and a 12-credit point dissertation. The Coursework and Dissertation option is only available to students who have completed 24 credit points towards the MIT with a GPA of 2.5 or greater.


You may enter this Masters degree via a pathway which provides you with foundational IT knowledge (Graduate Certificate in IT), before completing a Graduate Diploma and then the MIT. The complete pathway can be undertaken over four semesters.

Students may exit the Masters at various points, to complete the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology or the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management, Internetworking and Security or Data Science, depending on unit selection. The Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management forms the first half of the MIT (IT Management specialisation), the Graduate Diploma in Internetworking and Security forms the first half of the MIT (Internetworking and Security specialisation), while the Graduate Diploma in Data Science forms the first half of the MIT (Data Science).
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings Recognised Bachelor's degree in IT (AQF Level 7);
OR recognised non-IT Bachelor's degree plus an approved Diploma in IT (AQF Level 8);
OR recognised non-IT Honours degree (AQF Level 8) plus five or more years of relevant experience.
Recognition of relevant and current informal or non-formal learning may be used for entry requirements, and should be discussed with the Academic Chair.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Course Learning Outcomes LO 01 - Graduates of the IT management major will have advanced skills in knowledge management, data resources management and business analysis and an in-depth evaluation capability of the relevant state-of-the-art systems and methodologies
LO 02 - Graduates of the Internetworking&Security major will have advanced skills in network design, network administration, network management and security and an in-depth evaluation capability of the relevant state-of-the-art systems and technologies
LO 03 - Graduates of the Data Science major will have advanced skills in data and business analysis, data mining, big data and data resources management and an in-depth evaluation capability of the relevant advanced statistical tools and methods.
LO 04 - Graduates of the MIT will be able to demonstrate written, oral and interpersonal communication skills that support the efficient and effective communication of developed systems through documentation, technical reports and presentations to clients and the broader community.
LO 05 - Graduates of the MIT will be able to demonstrate and articulate a critical appraisal of the latest research activities in their selected major


Employment Prospects There is a critical need for modern IT professionals responsible for establishing, maintaining and developing information systems in a wide variety of sectors including commerce, telecommunications, health, education, architecture, mining, engineering, law and government and non-government organisations.
Professional Recognition Graduates of the Internetworking and Security specialisation are eligible to sit for the following industry certification exams: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Managing Securing Networks with Cisco Routers and Switches (SNRS).
Further Study Students who successfully complete the Master of Information Technology may apply for admission to the Doctor of Information Technology. The MIT (Coursework and Dissertation) also enables students to move on to study for a PhD in Information Technology.
Nested Awards Students can opt out of the Master of Information Technology and exit with the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology or the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management or the Graduate Diploma in Internetworking and Security or the Graduate Diploma in Data Science, subject to satisfying the course requirements.
Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
