Description | The Master of Teaching (Primary) is 1.75 years full-time equivalent (or 2.75 years part-time) initial teaching qualification for graduates who hold a Bachelor's degree in a non-Education field relevant to primary teaching. It offers graduates a professional preparation for teaching in primary schools, or for a wide range of other careers with an education focus. To be eligible, applicants must have at least one year of full-time-equivalent undergraduate study relevant to one or more of the learning areas of the Primary curriculum (i.e. English, Mathematics, the Arts, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education), and meet English language requirements. Graduates of the Master of Teaching (Primary) are eligible to apply for registration to teach in Australian primary schools. This course requires students to undertake work-based training through a compulsory work-based placement as part of their studies. |
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings | A recognised Bachelor's degree or higher, with at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to one or more of the learning areas of the Primary curriculum (i.e. English, Mathematics, the Arts, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education). Entry to the course is competitive, and requires evidence of consistent and sustained high achievement (grades of credit and above) in a relevant undergraduate bachelor degree. Students demonstrating English competence via IELTS, or an equivalent English Language proficiency assessment, must have attained an overall IELTS (or equivalent) score of 7.5 (with no score less than 7.0 in any of the four skills areas, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening), on entry. |
Special Requirements | Enrolment is subject to restriction due to professional recognition requirements. Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances. Information and forms regarding these mandatory requirements can be accessed via the Professional Experience website: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Education/Professional-Experience Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before placements can be arranged. A maximum of 25% of total Professional Experience days in the course may be taken overseas. Part-time study is available for Year One of the course. Students must be available to study full-time in Year Two. All students who commence an Initial Teacher Education Course from 2017 onwards are required to complete Literacy and Numeracy Tests for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE), administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). All students commencing an initial teacher education course from 2019 onwards will be required to successfully complete the SimLab Screening Evaluation to demonstrate that they meet the 'Fit for Profession' accreditation requirement. Course Learning Outcomes | The following Learning Outcomes are modified extracts from: AITSL (2015). Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia, Standards and procedures, AITSL, Melbourne. At the end of this course students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of primary school students and how they learn and the implications for teaching. 2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area 3. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning. 4. Proactively create and maintain engaging, supportive and safe learning environments by managing challenging behaviour and identifying strategies to support inclusive student participation 5. Demonstrate knowledge of assessment strategies, providing timely and appropriate feedback and school-based reporting of student learning. 6. Engage in professional learning through unit and practicum experiences. 7. Engage professionally with colleagues, teachers, parents/carers and the community through unit and practicum experiences. Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
