Description This course adheres to a scientist-practitioner model that stresses a systematic problem-solving approach. Its objective is to prepare psychologists who are skilled in individual casework and can apply their skills and knowledge to prevention, research, development, and evaluation at the individual and system levels.

The course consists of one year of full-time study. No part-time study is possible with this course. It includes coursework, practicum and research components. Entry to the course is very competitive and requires a recognised and accredited Bachelor of Arts degree (or Bachelor of Science degree) with at least 2A Honours in Psychology or its equivalent (e.g. an average Distinction level in a Bachelor of Psychology or Postgraduate/Graduate Diploma in Psychology/Bachelor of Psychology with evidence of an additional 6 months FTE of relevant experience).
Candidates undertake two practicums. This may include seeing clients within the University clinics or may include a workplace internship practicum by arrangement with the practicum coordinator.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings Entry to the program is very competitive and requires a recognised and accredited Bachelor of Arts degree (or Bachelor of Science degree) with at least 2A Honours in Psychology or a Postgraduate/Graduate Diploma in Psychology. Applicants will also need to supply referee reports and a personal statement that details their past accomplishments, future plans, and interests in the graduate psychology program. Interviews will be offered to the best candidates. Students with overseas qualifications who are accepted into the course and who wish to seek registration in Australia after graduation should ensure that their undergraduate qualifications meet the requirements of the relevant psychology registration board for equivalence to a four-year Australian degree in Psychology with at least 2A Honours.

Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0.
Special Requirements Graduate students must be registered from the start of their higher degree as a provisional psychologist. Within the first two weeks of commencing the course, the student must gain provisional registration with Psychology Board of Australia. As many agencies require all staff working with their clients or patients to have a police clearance, applicants are required to obtain a Federal police clearance (which will include WA clearance). In addition, if working with children a separate Working with Children Check is required. Clearly any agency will only be seeking information about behaviours that may place vulnerable clients at risk and will not be interested in any other type of behaviours. The applicant meets the cost of these clearances. Please note that some organisations providing professional placements require students to provide full immunisation records. Applicants must be in a position to provide these records if required.
Course Learning Outcomes Graduates will have specialized knowledge and skills for research and professional practice.
Graduates will have advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in psychological practice.
Graduates will have expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in psychological knowledge or practice to independently:
* analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories
* research and apply established theories to a psychological knowledge and practice
* interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Graduates will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility as a practitioner or learner.
Learning Outcome descriptors
The Masters (Professional) qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of contexts for professional practice or scholarship and as a pathway for further learning.
Graduates will have:
* a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in a psychological practice
* knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to professional psychology
* cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship
* cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice
* cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level
* communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences
* technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship
Graduates will demonstrate the application of knowledge & skills:
* with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning
* with high level personal autonomy and accountability
* to plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship
Specific purpose and specific learning outcomes
The stated purposes of the Program of Study are to:
(i) build on the knowledge and skills achieved in previous studies in psychology;
(ii) undertake research training including the ability to critically assess and apply research findings to inform evidence-based professional practice;
(iii) undertake advanced level study in psychology preparatory to further learning, and (iv) prepare graduates to undertake a PsyBA-approved internship program.
The stated learning outcomes of the Program of Study include:
(i) achieving competence in each of the Foundation Competencies for Psychology Interns, and
(ii) acquiring knowledge of the current version of the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing).
Employment Prospects Job prospects for psychologists are very good; employment growth is expected to be strong following recent government initiatives. On graduation from this course, students will be highly employable in a wide variety of areas, including private practice after meeting registration requirements, and working in various public and private sector agencies in areas such as health, community development, justice, education, and disabilities.
Professional Accreditation This course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).
Main research areas A range of research projects in professionally relevant areas will be available under the supervision of academic staff.
Other Facilities and Services The School of Psychology and Exercise Science has three clinics in which students may complete their practicum: an adult psychology clinic; a specialist child psychology clinic and a sport and exercise science clinic.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
