Description Conservation Biology is concerned with the study and protection of biological diversity. It requires a detailed understanding of biology as well as of the social, political and economic context in which conservation policy is developed and implemented. It is therefore an excellent interdisciplinary major embracing aspects of science and the social sciences. The core of the degree is a solid grounding in a range of biological disciplines and their application to the conservation of biota. This is supplemented by required material covering law and policy.
Murdoch's Bachelor of Science is a flexible degree which gives you the opportunity to build deep understanding and practical experience as well as to supplement your studies by engaging with industry and the community on relevant problems. You can even undertake studies through another discipline to broaden your understanding of the way in which science operates in relation to social, business, health and policy environments.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings As per normal undergraduate admission requirements. There are no prerequisites for admission but it is highly desirable for students to have undertaken TEE Chemistry or WACE Chemistry 3A/3B and at least Mathematics 2C/2D.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Special Requirements Students undertaking units in Conservation Biology will not be required to kill any vertebrate animal but they will be required to work with fresh tissue from dead animals in certain units.
Major Learning Outcomes KNOWLEDGE
MLO 1 - Demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of the diversity of life in biological, physical/environmental and social contexts.
MLO 2 - Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and core concepts of the biology and ecology, with an emphasis on the conservation science.
MLO 3 - Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of abiotic and biotic processes and how these impact on marine and terrestrial organisms and ecosystems.
MLO 4 - Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of experimental design and analysis appropriate to conservation biology including the use of contemporary multivariate analyses.
MLO 5 - Demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of how political, socio-economic, cultural and indigenous factors at local, regional, national and international levels can influence management decisions.
MLO 6 - Demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the state and federal requirements relating to wildlife studies, i.e. codes of practice relating to animal welfare
MLO 7 - Demonstrate not only a broad and coherent knowledge of the major themes of conservation biology but also an understanding of how these themes are integrated to develop conservation strategies.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.

Major Prerequisites

Chemistry Background

Students who achieved a final scaled score of 50 percent or more in Chemistry 3A/3B or Chemistry ATAR within the past three years should seek an exemption from their Academic Chair for CHE140 Fundamentals of Chemistry. Students who have completed previous chemistry not stated above should also consult their Academic Chair for clarification of their enrolment requirements.
