Description A knowledge of chemical concepts is applicable to all areas of science and has many industrial and engineering applications. Chemists play leading roles in fighting disease (in humans, animals and agriculture), criminal investigations, discovery and utilisation of natural resources, developing sustainable industrial processes, and creating novel nano-materials.

The Chemistry major has been designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of chemistry whilst retaining the flexibility to study complementary areas of interest.
Murdoch's Bachelor of Science is a flexible degree which gives you the opportunity to build deep understanding and practical experience as well as to supplement your studies by engaging with industry and the community on relevant problems. You can even undertake studies through another discipline to broaden your understanding of the way in which science operates in relation to social, business, health and policy environments.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings As per normal undergraduate admission requirements.

It is recommended that students entering this major have completed Chemistry ATAR, Physics ATAR and Mathematics Specialist ATAR.

Applicants with other backgrounds will be considered for admission, but may need to undertake bridging units in first year.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Special Requirements Students enrolling in units that have a practical component must make allowance for on-campus attendance to complete the practical work. The on-campus sessions for external students are generally held in a one-week block for each unit; the dates are published in each unit guide.
Major Learning Outcomes Chemistry is the science of analysing, transforming or manipulating substances and the molecular interpretation of the world around us. It is at the molecular level that major advances are made in diverse areas such as medicine, agriculture, biology, materials, energy, and the environment: chemistry is a vital connection across all these disciplines.

Traditionally, chemistry is classified into four main branches: inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry. However, in the Murdoch Chemistry major you will soon discover that the nature of chemistry is such that there are no distinct boundaries between the sciences, and modern chemistry is increasingly described thematically, encompassing topics that overlap the traditional branches and address the interfaces of chemistry with emerging disciplines, such as chemical biology and chemical physics, as well as applied fields like environmental restoration, food biosecurity, chemical engineering, and materials science.

The Chemistry program at Murdoch will provide you with the necessary detailed chemical knowledge to function as a scientist in the modern world, while also providing flexibility to explore other disciplines and the ability to apply your skills to those big questions needed to make our society.

KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrate an understanding that chemistry involves three related concepts:
a) macroscopic, or observable properties and changes;
b) the explanation of those properties and changes in terms of a molecular level description; and
c) the use of chemical language and symbols to represent both macroscopic and microscopic phenomena.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and apply the principles and concepts of, chemistry to address issues at a local, national, and international level.

SKILLS
Investigate and solve qualitative and quantitative problems in the chemical sciences, both individually and in teams, by:
a) formulating hypotheses, proposals and predictions and designing and undertaking experiments in a safe and responsible manner
b) applying recognised methods and appropriate practical techniques and tools, and being able to adapt these techniques when necessary
c) collecting, recording and interpreting data an incorporating qualitative and quantitative evidence into scientifically defensible arguments
d) synthesising and evaluating information from a range of sources, including traditional and emerging information technologies and methods.
Communicate chemical knowledge by:
a) appropriately documenting the essential details of procedures undertaken, key observations, results and conclusions
b) presenting information, articulating arguments and conclusions, in a variety of modes, to diverse audiences, and for a range of purposes.

Take personal, professional and social responsibility by:
a) demonstrating the relevant and required ethical conduct and behaviour within which chemistry is practised

Employment Prospects The employment situation for graduates with a Chemistry degree is bright, especially for those who combine chemistry with other disciplines. Opportunities for chemists are not limited to Australia, and the skills and knowledge acquired in a chemistry degree are valued around the world. The skills learned whilst studying chemistry can take graduates on to a satisfying career in numerous fields both in and out of the lab anywhere in the world. Chemists are found in roles within law and accounting firms, NGOs, government policy positions at the local and international level, and the art world. Creativity, passion, logical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to analyse complex situations are all skills at the top of any employer's list of desirable attributes. Chemists have these abilities in abundance. That's why chemists can be found at the forefront of research, teaching, the arts, and business.
Professional Recognition With an appropriate choice of units, graduates are eligible for membership of the professional organisation for chemists, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
