Description Primary Teacher Education graduates are qualified to teach from Years 1 to 6 in primary schools.
The Bachelor of Education enables students to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities to become a teacher. Students are supported in becoming effective educators with a strong grounding in learning, teaching and curriculum. Professional Experience is a key component of the degree, providing students with opportunities to engage with schools and the broader community and to apply their knowledge and skills in a range of school settings. Murdoch Education graduates develop the understanding and capacity to be a teacher as researcher, an agent for change and a socially just practitioner. The degree provides a foundation for lifelong learning through continued professional development and/or further study.
Professional Experience: There are 85 days of moderated teaching practice in this course.

This course requires students to undertake work-based training through a compulsory work-based placement as part of their studies.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings As per normal undergraduate admission requirements.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0.
Special Requirements Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances. Information and forms regarding these mandatory requirements can be accessed via the Professional Experience website: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Education/Professional-Experience Completion and submission of these mandatory requirements is essential before placements can be arranged.

A maximum of 25% of total Professional Experience days in the course may be taken overseas.

Please note the following requirements for Teacher Registration in Australia: Students admitted to Initial Teacher Education programs on the basis of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment, or an equivalent English language proficiency assessment, must have attained an overall IELTS (or equivalent) score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in any of the four skills areas, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening), either on entry to or on graduation from the program.

All students who commence an Initial Teacher Education Course from 2017 onwards are required to complete Literacy and Numeracy Tests for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE), administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). All students commencing an initial teacher education course from 2019 onwards will be required to successfully complete the SimLab Screening

Major Learning Outcomes * Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the implications for learning and teaching of children's physical, cultural, social, linguistic and intellectual characteristics.

Employment Prospects Murdoch teacher education graduates are employed in government and non-government schools and other education-related occupations.
Professional Recognition On completion of the Bachelor of Education, students have a widely accepted qualification from a recognised university and are eligible to apply for registration with the Teacher Registration Board of WA (or other appropriate state registration boards).

External Study Not all required units in these majors are offered completely externally. Some are offered as intensive sessions on-campus or in Perth metropolitan schools. Every effort is made to combine these units to enable students to arrange one on-campus session to complete these requirements.

a) External students must undertake the placement component for EDN2104 Professional Experience: English in Practice in a Perth metropolitan school and under the guidance of a Murdoch University Moderator. Subject to satisfactory completion of this unit, students may arrange, in consultation with the School of Education Professional Experience Office, to complete their subsequent professional experience in a school other than in metropolitan Perth..

b) On-campus attendance is required for a one-week intensive workshop covering both EDN248 Teaching Health and Physical Education in Early Childhood and Primary AND EDN236 Teaching The Arts in Early Childhood and Primary.
Alternative Entry Pathway An alternative entry pathway exists via the Primary Teaching Combination from Challenger Institute of Technology to the Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching). This pathway provides applicants with advanced standing once they enter the University.
Exemptions/Credit Students seeking exemptions must be able to provide documentary evidence in support of their application. Students who have had at least two years of full-time recent, relevant and satisfactory teaching experience in an Australian school context may seek partial exemption from a Professional Experience unit. While Murdoch recognises that some students may have prior and/or current teaching experience, it requires that a student's classroom competence be assessed before exemptions from School Experience can be given. Students who have been employed as a teacher and have had at least one year of full-time equivalent recent, relevant and satisfactory teaching experience in an Australian school context may seek exemption from BED150 Understanding Teachers' Work. Students cannot receive exemption from Final Professional Experience (1 & 2): Primary Teaching units. If seeking un-credentialed credit students must submit a case in writing, with supporting documentary evidence to explain how the outcomes of units have already been achieved through prior experience. All applications for exemption and credit must be directed to the Accreditation Officer.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
