Description The approach of the technologist is, wherever possible, to use and adapt 'off the shelf' building blocks and components to create and/or modify the required software and/or hardware. In this degree students are free to choose from a range of units; however, there are four key areas of study:

Industrial Computer Systems: concerned with the specification, design, implementation and commissioning of industrial control systems. It is a combination of both computer hardware and software to meet the requirements of the industrial measurement and control application.

Instrumentation and Control: concerned with instrumentation installation, specification, systems monitoring and operational control of a wide range of manufacturing and process oriented industries.

Electrical Power: associated with power system elements including power generators, transmission and distribution system components as well as power system analysis, operation and control.

Renewable Energy Systems: concerned with the study and use of renewable energy technologies and energy sources with an emphasis on electrical generation.
Murdoch's Bachelor of Science is a flexible degree which gives you the opportunity to build deep understanding and practical experience as well as to supplement your studies by engaging with industry and the community on relevant problems. You can even undertake studies through another discipline to broaden your understanding of the way in which science operates in relation to social, business, health and policy environments.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings As per normal undergraduate admission requirements. It is recommended that students have completed the equivalent of WACE Mathematics 3C/3D, Mathematics: Specialist 3C/3D and WACE Physics 3A/3B. Students who do not have the necessary Mathematical and Physics prerequisite knowledge may take an extra semester to complete their studies.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Major Learning Outcomes KNOWLEDGE
The Bachelor of Technology program aims to provide graduates with
* the necessary knowledge to approach with confidence any task within their field of technology practice.
* the necessary skills to apply with confidence their knowledge to solve problems within their field of technology practice.
The knowledge that will enable a student to understand advanced concepts in engineering technology include the following material from mathematics, science and engineering:
* Mathematics - complex numbers and algebra; calculus and Laplace transforms for system dynamics; Fourier analysis for power quality; matrix methods for linear distribution networks; mathematical modelling
* Physics - concepts of charge, current, potential difference, voltage, energy, power; electric and magnetic fields; force and torque; power and energy balance; thermodynamics
* Circuits - circuit laws (KVL and KCL); superposition; equivalent circuits, including Thevenin and Norton equivalents; impedance; phasor analysis; transfer function; filters
* Computer programming - writing programs within a high level applications package, such as MATLAB. The purpose of programming is not only to learn how to write code to perform a given computational task, but also to appreciate the limitations of commercial application packages, such as a power systems simulator.

SKILLS
The skills that will prepare a student to handle advanced problems in engineering technology include:
* applying knowledge of science, mathematics and engineering principles
* problem identification and formulation, and solution by the effective application of current technology

Employment Prospects This degree offers study suitable for graduates to enter a wide range of engineering and applied science careers as Engineering Technologists. Depending on the specific units chosen, graduates may pursue careers in industries associated with computing and information technology, industrial computer systems, instrumentation and control.
Advanced Standing This major is designed to admit students either through direct entry to the University, or via TAFE. Students who have completed appropriate TAFE qualifications may be admitted directly into the second year of the major.

Upon successful completion of this course, it is possible with one further year of study to upgrade to a Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree. It should be noted that if a sufficient level of performance is achieved in the first year, it is also possible to transfer into the Engineering course in the second year of study.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.

Major Prerequisites

Mathematics Background

Students may need to complete one prerequisite unit depending on their background in mathematics with either a C grade in Mathematics Specialist ATAR (or Mathematics: Specialist 3C/3D) or a final scaled score of 60 percent or more in Mathematics Methods ATAR (or Mathematics 3C/3D). Students without this background will need to complete:
