Description The Graduate Diploma in Safety Science is based on the scientific-practitioner model. It provides an understanding into areas covering engineering and psychology principles relevant to safety. It is particularly appropriate for those currently working in industry where further knowledge in safety is desired. It is intended for those who are practicing, or intend to be practicing in Occupational Safety & Health (OSH). Admission requirements are a minimum bachelor's level degree in a cognate discipline or equivalent industry experience. Enrolment is also open to graduates from other disciplines who are interested in understanding process safety, fire and explosion safety, psychometric assessment, organisational culture, psychosocial hazards, human factors, management of change and Environmental Assessment and Risk Management. It will also provide the graduate with the requisite coursework to undertake subsequent higher post-graduate degree courses.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings Recognised Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) in the environmental or chemical engineering discipline. Students with recognised prior learning in other disciplines or practice are also eligible for admission as determined by the Academic Chair.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Special Requirements Candidates are assumed to have some prior knowledge and must have passed the following units at Murdoch or their equivalent elsewhere:

Course Learning Outcomes * Working knowledge of and ability to apply the scientific-practitioner model into areas covering engineering and psychology principles relevant to safety.
* Understanding the physics, biological, medical and engineering aspects of safety, social policy and organizational aspects, the assessment, management and communication of risks, the effectiveness of control and management techniques for safety, standardization, legislation and inspection.
Understanding safety programs, engineering ethics, statistics, toxicology, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, toxic release and dispersion models, fires and explosions and concepts to prevent them, hazards identification and case studies.
* Basic understanding in relation to the accomplishment of recreation of the fire spread through a building which requires application of physical metallurgy, strength of materials, architectural design, computer skills and simulation, thermochemistry, fire dynamics, combustion chemistry, heat transfer, spread of flames, spontaneous ignition, production and movement of smoke, etc., interviewing skills.
* Understanding the radiation hazards, bio-hazardous organisms, laboratory hazards including viruses, fungi and bacteria, microorganisms, safe design and practice.
* Understanding of the effect of electricity on human body, electrical hazards, commercial and domestic installations and power systems, engineering safeguards and controls, electrical safety code for installation including building wiring, product standard certification and enforcement, risk assessment and management.
* Foster knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of continuous improvement in a range of healthcare settings, developing an understanding of creative, effective and practical approaches to implementing quality and safety practices in the workplace, evidence based leadership and management strategies.
* Understanding and applying human characteristics to improving the design of machines, systems and team environments to reduce the likelihood of error, strategies to improve the human-machine interface and human-to-human interactions, using human factors to build defences into the healthcare system to protect patients, theories of work related stress, mental health (and ill health) at work.
* Understanding professional, practical and methodological issues related to the practice of organisational psychology, ethical and legal issues, cultural and ethnic issues, consulting skills, working with data in organisations, service evaluation, record keeping, report writing and accountability.
* Application of science to environmental assessment and management for environmental professional practice and to understand an integrated risk management framework that can be applied to a wide range of industries, policy instruments, decision-making and public engagement, environmental assessment and management at all scales of application from the local to regional, national and international level, and across a range of applications including protected area management, industry, government planning agencies.
Employment Prospects The Safety Science Diploma holders can find employment in industrial or government organisations as safety professionals in a managerial OSH role, which requires a minimum Graduate Diploma level degree.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
