Description The Master of Counselling supports students in developing professional competence and personal readiness for a career in counselling. The course is committed to experiential learning, with an emphasis on the counselling relationship, the key feature of effective counselling practice. All students engage in the critical appraisal of selected counselling literature/research. In the second year students can complete a substantial research project addressing an issue in counselling theory or practice, or complete their award through course work and a smaller research project. Two supervised placements provide students with the opportunity to develop an integrated and professional counselling practice.
This course requires students to undertake work-based training through a compulsory work-based placement as part of their studies.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings For direct entry into the Masters of Counselling, applicants should have a three-year degree (AQF Level 7) from a recognised university in an area related to counselling such as psychology, social work, occupational therapy, nursing, education or human services. Preference will be given to applicants who also have experience, either paid or volunteer, in a counselling role. Applicants not selected for the Masters may be admitted to either the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma course and then apply for entry to the Masters level upon successful completion. Applicants are encouraged to apply early. The admission process includes both application and interview.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0.
Special Requirements Students undertaking clinical placements in CSL 679 and CSL 621 must obtain a current police clearance, working with children check, and be up to date on certain immunisations per Murdoch University's immunisation policy. Course Learning Outcomes KNOWLEDGE
Understand theoretical and practical principles of Counselling and develop the ability to critically think about Counselling models and practice by:
* demonstrating and applying knowledge, principles and concepts of evidence-based counselling practice;
* recognising how the legislative and professional frameworks impact on Counselling practice and health care;
* recognising how Counselling plays an essential role in society and the promotion of health and well being.

Possess skills within a professional and ethical framework evidenced by:
* conducting a comprehensive case conceptualisation through comprehensive and yet integrative assessment based on sound research evidence;
* establishing and maintaining and therapeutic relationships;
* demonstrating a foundational set of clinical and critical thinking skills in counselling in relation to a broad set of client problems;
* application of case-based theoretical knowledge that forms the base for extended learning of clinical skills
* synthesising and evaluating information from a range of sources.

Provide collaborative therapeutic practice and be engaged in developing knowledge in the field of counselling by:
* applying knowledge and skills of effective counselling practice in the context of interdisciplinary teams in a range of counselling settings as the premise for delivering quality client-centred counselling services;
* demonstrating initiative and judgement in professional practice and/or scholarship as well as responsibility and accountability for their own learning and practice and in collaboration with others;
* participating in ongoing professional development of self and others;
* communicating appropriately an understanding of client-related and process-based information, and their implication in terms of intervention choices and outcomes;
* presenting knowledge and information, and articulating arguments and conclusions, in a variety of modes, to diverse audiences, and for a range of purposes that include assessment, treatment, education and research;
* planning and executing a piece of research and scholarship under scholarly supervision.
Take personal, professional and social responsibility by:
* recognising and adhere by the relevant and required ethical conduct and behaviour within which Counselling is practised;
* recognising and attending to personal development as a critical aspect of sound clinical practice;
* working responsibly and safely whilst demonstrating a capacity for self-directed learning;
* understanding and being able to articulate aspects of the place and importance of Counselling in the local and global community.
Employment Prospects On completion of the course graduates will be eligible to be employed in government and non-government counselling organisations working with adults, children, families and couples. They will be ready for employment in settings requiring individual and group therapy competence.
Professional Recognition Graduates are eligible to apply for intern registration with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and to then work towards clinical registration with PACFA. Graduates are eligible to apply for Level 2 membership with the Australian Counselling Association and then work towards Level 3/ 4 Clinical membership.

Nested Awards Students can opt out of the Master of Counselling and exit with either the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma subject to satisfying the relevant course requirements.
Advanced Standing Up to 24 credit points is available of advanced standing to students who have a Level 8 Graduate Diploma in Counselling or who have successfully completed a minimum of Level 8 units with learning outcomes equivalent to one or more units comprising the Master of Counselling.
Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
