Description The aim of this degree is to train an adaptable animal scientist who will find employment in a wide range of agricultural industries. The degree will be excellent preparation for a career in animal agriculture and the animal research industries.

In the first year, students will be introduced to the major animal production industries and also study chemistry, introductory physiology and anatomy, statistics and cell biology,

During second and third year, students will undertake further study in animal production systems (including scientific writing and communication), biochemistry, physiology and anatomy, statistics, pathology, nutrition, toxicology and genetics.
Murdoch's Bachelor of Science is a flexible degree which gives you the opportunity to build deep understanding and practical experience as well as to supplement your studies by engaging with industry and the community on relevant problems. You can even undertake studies through another discipline to broaden your understanding of the way in which science operates in relation to social, business, health and policy environments.
Admission Requirements: Onshore course offerings As per normal undergraduate admission requirements. There are no prerequisites for admission but it is highly desirable for students to have studied WACE Chemistry 3A/3B and at least Mathematics 2A/2B.

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Special Requirements Internet access; on-campus attendance for laboratory sessions.
Major Learning Outcomes The aim of this degree is to train an adaptable animal scientist who will find employment in a wide range of agricultural industries. The degree will be excellent preparation for a career in animal agriculture and the animal research industries. In the first year, students will be introduced to the major animal production industries and also study chemistry, introductory physiology and anatomy, statistics, and cell biology. During second and third year, students will undertake further study in biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, nutrition, and a number of units focused on animal production systems which investigate the key production animal industries in Australia. Specific research skills units enable students to develop expertise in experimental design and analysis, critical thinking, and scientific writing and communication. For those wishing to graduate with Honours, students have competitive access to an additional honours year, whereby they can undertake a research project.

KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrate an understanding of animal science in the following key areas:
a) Structure and function of the key production animal industries
b) Detailed knowledge of mammalian biology as it relates to food and fibre production. This includes knowledge of:
i) Cellular structure and biochemistry
ii) Mammalian physiology and anatomy
iii) Production animal nutrition
c) Broad knowledge of the diseases that affect production animals
d) Broad knowledge of environmental, ethical, economic and cultural issues challenging the production animal industries and its sustainability; and
e) Detailed knowledge of a systems approach to animal production.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to address issues at a local, national, and international level.

SKILLS
Investigate and solve qualitative and quantitative problems in the animal sciences, both individually and in teams, by:
a) Capacity to undertake whole of business analysis of a farming enterprise.
b) Specific animal handling skills relevant to the key production animal species.
c) Formulating hypotheses, proposals and predictions and designing and undertaking experiments in a safe, ethical and responsible manner.
d) Applying recognised methods and appropriate practical techniques and tools, and being able to adapt these techniques when necessary.
e) Synthesising and evaluating information from a range of sources, including traditional and emerging information technologies and methods.
f) Communicate scientific information and research outcomes in both written and oral forms.
g) Attaining practical industry experience and skills in a production animal industry setting through industry placements.

APPLICATION
Take personal, professional and social responsibility by:
a) A demonstrated understanding of the ethics associated with production animal research.
b) Apply knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to address issues at a local, national, and international level, and across multiple production animal industries (ie pork, beef, lamb/wool etc).
c) Apply knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to work in an interdisciplinary team to solve issues at a local, national, and international level.

Employment Prospects Gradlink surveys over the past five years indicate at least 75 per cent full-time employment. About 20 per cent of graduates go on to further full-time study. Agricultural industries employ animal science graduates in a variety of roles such as consultants, technical advisors, and government research officers.

Mid-year entry clarification Students enrolling mid-year should note that it is not possible to complete the major in three years, so 3.5 years will be required. International students in particular should take this into account when planning enrolments, visas, and fees.
Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.

Chemistry Background

Students who achieved a final scaled score of 50 percent or more in Chemistry 3A/3B or Chemistry ATAR within the past three years should seek an exemption from their Academic Chair for CHE140 Fundamentals of Chemistry. Students who have completed previous chemistry not stated above should also consult their Academic Chair for clarification of their enrolment requirements.
