Study at Murdoch: A General Guide
University Medals | Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Academic Excellence | Division and School Prizes
Detailed information on postgraduate awards can be obtained from the Division of Research and Development. Detailed information on undergraduate prizes can be obtained from the Executive Officer of the Division or School concerned.
Up to seven Medals may be awarded each year for outstanding academic performance by undergraduate students. At least one is awarded to an eligible student from each Division.
Medals are awarded to students who completed an ordinary bachelor degree, or an honours degree not requiring an additional period of study than the ordinary degree. Students who complete the Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Biology are only eligible if not proceeding to the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.
To be eligible, students must have completed at least 48 credit points of graded Murdoch University units. Students completing graduate-entry bachelor degrees are eligible if the degree is at least 48 credit points.
The Medals are awarded on the basis of an academic score. The score is calculated by aggregating the score for each of the student’s units calculated by multiplying the unit credit points by a grade weighting, and dividing the result by the total unit credit points. Usually a score is required that is the equivalent of 63 points of High Distinctions and 9 points of Distinctions in a 72-point degree.
Award of the Medal is recorded on the student’s academic transcript, an honour board and the University web site.
http://graduations.murdoch.edu.au/medallists.html
Medallists receive an engraved silver medal and a cheque for $1500.
The University’s policy on the Award of University Medals can be found at:
http://www.murdoch.edu.au/admin/polproc/medals.html
This award recognises academic excellence amongst the best students enrolled in the ordinary bachelor degree (or in the honours degree if this does not involve an additional year). These students are selected annually by Divisions, with each Division invited to select up to 2 per cent of its students from the previous year. Part-time students are eligible at each 24-point mark in their degree. Each awardee must have obtained at least 15 points of High Distinctions in the previous year (or, if a part-time student, in the relevant period). However, this is only a minimum requirement; if more than 2 per cent of the Division’s students have 15 points of High Distinctions, the Division will select awardees from within this group. Each recipient has the award recorded on her or his academic transcript and is given a certificate to mark the achievement at a presentation ceremony.
All prizes are awarded annually for the best academic performance in the studies specified, except where shown otherwise.
