Description: 

This unit provides the understandings about language and literacy essential for primary teachers. It introduces students to several different ways of looking at language and the relationships between language structure and function, language and culture, language and learning, and how language informs our views of the world. The idea that different media, topics, audiences and purposes require different literacies will be explored.

Contact time: 

Lectures/workshops: 3 hours per week.
Rockingham students should note that EDU103 at Rockingham is taught in a combined lecture/workshop format. Rockingham students should enrol in one three-hour workshop. There is no additional lecture.

Prerequisites: 

Nil.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Quota: 

This unit is subject to quota. Quota is due to limited resources and applies to the Rockingham offering. Preference will be given to students in the BEd (Primary) at Rockingham campus.

Students who have successfully completed a unit may not enrol for credit in any subsequent version of that unit, even if under a different code and/or title, nor in any parallel lower- or higher-level version. Students enrolled in a higher-level version of a unit are required to demonstrate advanced analytical skills and/or use of advanced research tools in assignments modified for that level.

Cancellation of Courses, Minors and Units
The University reserves the right to cancel, without notice, any course, major, minor or unit if the number of students enrolled falls below limits set by the University.
