Description: 

This unit aims to prepare students for teaching English in primary classrooms. The unit focuses on the teaching and learning of speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing in the context of general language development. It also introduces theories of language acquisition and language learning which underpin work in literacy, language arts and language across the curriculum. The unit provides relevant preparation for students intending to teach in primary schools.

Contact time: 

Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 3 hours per week plus the equivalent of 1.5 days intensive during Winter Term.
Due to the nature of offering this unit students are recommended to seek confirmation of the exact attendance dates and requirements from the Unit Coordinator closer to the commencement date of the teaching period.

Prerequisites: 

Enrolment in BEd (Primary), BEd (Early Childhood and Primary), BEd (Primary)/BA (Australian Indigenous Studies) and successful completion of E101/EDU101 Introduction to Teaching and EDU103 Principles of Language and Literacy; OR enrolment in BEd (Primary) (Graduate) and successful completion of E101/EDU101.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Notes: 

Students enrolled in the BEd (Primary) are recommended to enrol in EDU3151 School Experience: Primary BEd in the same semester.
OR
Students enrolled in the BEd (Primary) (Graduate) are recommended to enrol in EDU2151 School Experience: GradDipEd (Primary) in the same semester.

Quota:

Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) are recommended to enrol in EDU2151 School Experience: GradDipEd (Primary) in the same semester.
