Description: 

This unit explores current coastal and marine management issues and practices by focusing on the diverse habitats represented along the Western Australian coastline. Emphasis is placed on the use of spatial data and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology. Practicals include mapping of beaches, detection and monitoring of coastal change using remote sensing imagery, and GIS applications for coastal resource inventories, habitat mapping and assessment of vulnerability in planning for coastal development.

Contact time: 

Lectures: 2 hours per week; practical work: 3 hours per week.

Prerequisites: 

ENV213 Atmospheric Science, ENV268 Ecology, ENV282 Oceanography and Marine Pollution and BIO384 Marine and Estuarine Biology.

Quota: 

This unit is subject to quota due to laboratory space. Selection is based on academic achievement in ENV282.
