Description: 

This unit provides a conceptual background to the design and implementation of environmental monitoring programs, and practical experience in the collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of monitoring data. The unit considers physical, chemical, biological and social monitoring, and short and long term programs. Geographical information systems and remote sensing are given special attention. The unit considers monitoring of terrestrial and aquatic (both marine and freshwater systems) in addition to airborne compounds and social systems.

Contact time: 

Lectures: 2 hours per week; practical work: 3 hours per week.

Prerequisites: 

Undergraduates: ENV102 Introduction to Environmental Science and
ENV268 Ecology.
Postgraduates: Enrolment in a postgraduate science course or MA in Education for Sustainability.

Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
