Description: 

This unit teaches the theories of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), focusing on the policy and procedures involved. The origin, history and continuing evolution of EIA are covered from the perspective of both Australian and international practice. The role of EIA as both a planning and management tool along with strategic environmental assessment and sustainability assessment are covered. The preparation and review of various EIA documents including environmental management programs are covered. The political nature of environmental decision-making is considered.

Contact time: 

Students will be required to attend 2 intensive weekends (Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon) near the start and middle of the semester and 1 intensive day on a weekend (Saturday) near the end of the semester. Students will work independently on individual projects during semester.
Due to the nature of offering this unit students are recommended to seek confirmation of the exact attendance dates and requirements from the Unit Coordinator closer to the commencement date of the teaching period.

Prerequisites: 

Undergraduates: completion of all of the 200-level required units in the BSc (Environmental Science).
Postgraduates: enrolment in a postgraduate environmental science, or similar, course.

Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
