Description: 

In this unit students will learn to use the prominent mathematical computer package MATLAB to perform basic mathematical procedures and to solve problems in the general area of discrete mathematics. Topics: recurrence relations, solving equations graphically and iteratively, computer arithmetic, matrices and linear transformations of the plane, solving systems of linear equations by Gaussian elimination, propositional and predicate logic, mathematical induction, Boolean algebra and logic networks.

Contact time: 

Lectures/tutorials/computer laboratories: 4 hours per week.

Prerequisites: 

A pass in Year 11 Foundations of Mathematics, or equivalent.

Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
