This unit aims to develop students' analytical expertise beyond the basic level of PEC240 Analytical Chemistry by focusing on important, modern instrumental methods of chemical analysis. Techniques covered include thermal methods, surface analysis, electroanalysis, x-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, HPLC, radiochemical methods, hyphenated techniques. Laboratory classes are organised so that students gain valuable 'hands on' experience with instruments they may expect to see in research, industrial and commercial laboratories. Special emphasis will be placed on emerging analytical technologies.

Contact time:

Lectures: 4 hours per week; laboratories: 4 hours per week.
