International Study Tour Opportunities (ANS301)

Organisational Unit Agricultural Sciences
Credit Points 3
Availability MURDOCH: S2N-internal
Description This unit offers international study tours to selected students, examining the agricultural value chain from animal production, animal and food processing, to retail marketing and innovative industry technologies. Tours offer a firsthand experience of agricultural practices. Activities include visits to farms and production enterprises, food processing plants, retail and agricultural sites. These are interspersed with presentations from experts from university research groups, industry partners and agricultural professionals, and additional activities such as basic language training, and visits to key cultural facilities.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Describe varying agricultural farming systems in the host country.
2. Compare and understand differences in agricultural systems between the host country and Australia.
3. Increased agricultural and supply chain knowledge
4. Improved learning skills: able to present oral or poster presentation and/or discussion summarising key insights from LOs 1-3.
5. Build international contacts and relationships, and have increased social, cultural understanding
6. Maintain a learning diary while touring agricultural facilities and attending associated presentations.
7. Prepare a comprehensive written report integrating LOs 1-4.
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences The principal learning experience is a study tour of China held during the Winter term. This is an immersive experience in which students will observe first hand the agricultural systems used in another country, thereby appreciating the roles of culture and science in determining the final systems adopted in any particular context.
Other Learning Experiences Activities pre- and post- tour are not timetabled. Students will be informed accordingly when these activities occur.
Assessment There are three assessment components: a pre-departure assessment to ensure readiness for the study tour, oral presentations and/or discussion related to the tour visits, and a final summary of the overall tour.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
