Description This is the capstone unit for the Crop and Pasture Science major and considers the detailed principles of growing crops and pastures, including understanding advanced agricultural science approaches such as plant breeding, molecular agriculture and biotechnology. Using case studies based on major Australian farming systems it will bring together the learning from across the major and emphasise the importance of understanding the role of soils, crop protection and biosecurity, agricultural technologies and agricultural markets, economics and policy in modern agriculture.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit, students will have:
1. advanced understanding, and specific knowledge about Crop and Pasture Science.
2. a detailed understanding of new technologies in agriculture, and the management of pests, diseases and weeds.
3. understanding of the interactions between different components in agricultural systems
4. knowledge of how agricultural systems can be manipulated for increased profitable and sustainable production
5. knowledge about plant breeding and plant selection including exploitation of genome sequencing, and the tools that are available in modern agriculture
6. skills for critical analysis of information related to modern agriculture, including confidence in use of formal and informal sources and the ability to discriminate between these.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; practical work and field excursions: equivalent to 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit combines formal lectures that explore the underlying principles of crop and pasture production, with case studies that illuminate how this knowledge is critical in a range of applied, contexts. Formal lectures are underpinned with readings from seminal publications.
A series of field and laboratory practicals will give students the opportunity to explore crop and pasture production in the field, with a one-day visit to a working WA wheatbelt farm that integrates crop and animal production.
Students are given the opportunity to illustrate their learnings in (a) a half-semester on-line quiz (20%), (b) a literature review (2500 words) which integrates across the theoretical and practical aspects of the unit and draws new conclusions (50%), and (c) a formal examination of all material (30%).
Assessment Assessment will be aimed at determining the level of understanding of each student, using an array of techniques (on line quiz (20%), literature review (50%) and formal examination (30%). The written assignment will also aim to develop the student's report writing skills by setting a task that integrates across content presented in lectures, from readings and field excursions.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
