Applied Animal Agriculture (ANS363)

|Description||This unit enables students to increase their knowledge and expertise in various specialisations in applied animal agriculture. This unit helps prepare students for their chosen career paths by bringing them up to date with current scientific knowledge and issues, with respect to applied animal agriculture, and enables development of rational arguments on current industry topics. Teaching will be in the form of student-centred learning modules. Details about modules can be obtained from the Unit Coordinator prior to enrolment.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||The unit allows students to choose their own topics of interest from a list of modules or Study Guides. These Study Guides incorporate the information required to learn the module, and may direct the students to specified reading material available in the library, online, or as farm notes (usually attached to the Study Guide). Throughout the Study Guide there will be directed questions to help students see if they are comprehending the reading material. Answers to the questions are also provided at the back of the Study Guide.
The learning objectives depend on the modules chosen by the student. Specific aims and learning objectives are detailed at the start of each of the Study Guides, which are available on LMS.

|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is based on self-paced, student-centred learning modules. The learning modules are presented to the students in pre-prepared study guides that the students can work on at their own pace, and away from the University. This enables students to organise the timing of this elective unit around other units. The actual face-to-face delivery of ANS363 is minimal as the unit coordinator usually only sees the students for any help needed with the study guide and for the assessment (viva voce) of each module during the seminar/workshop.. ANS363 was specifically designed to allow flexibility of learning, as well as to provide knowledge on the current issues in Animal Production.|
|Assessment||Assessment is a 20 minute oral (viva voce) examination after completion of each of up to 3 modules to make up 3 points (1pt module = 33.3% equivalent 1500 words; 2 pt module = 66.6% equivalent 3000 words), where the examiner will assesses whether the student has developed sufficient knowledge and understanding of the information presented in the study guide. There is no fixed due date, but assessment of all modules must be completed during the scheduled seminar/workshop times and all modules must be completed by the end of semester. This assessment strategy aims to ensure the student attains an appropriate standard, is given immediate feedback on their progress in the unit, and gives reward for extra effort, self-guided learning, and for 'deep learning'.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science or Animal Health major) or permission of the Academic Chair.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed ANS359 Applied Animal Agriculture may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
