Perceptions of South-East Asian Society (AST556)

|Description||This unit seeks to develop an awareness of the impact of colonialism on traditional societies in South-East Asia, and the perceptions of the coloniser and colonised of each other, on the basis of literary (novels and short stories) and historical records. Attention will be paid to life and work in traditional South-East Asian societies in the pre-colonial period, patterns of colonial administration and oppression, social and psychological dislocation and the universality of the colonial experience.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Describe the more important themes in the modern history of Southeast Asia under colonial rule.
2. Describe the historical processes responsible for the transformation of social patterns and cultural norms as perceived by Southeast Asians.
3. Discuss the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized and the effects of colonization on the societies and cultures of Southeast Asia.
4. Critically analyse, compare and interpret literature as a source for the social history of Southeast Asia.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Seminar: 3 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach taken to learning in this unit is a series of thematic lectures and slide presentations on both the character of particular types of colonialism and the novelist or writer, and the social-intellectual context of the author's work. The tutorial involves group based discussion, of the theoretical reading and novels on a weekly basis by student members.|
|Assessment||Assessment in this unit comprises two essays and an examination. The first essay is based on Alfred Memmi's , The Colonizer and Colonized, ( 25% Int. 35% Ext.) The second essay is thematic, using literature as a source for history( Int. 25% Ext.35%) ; the examination is based on unite readings( Int and Ext. 30%). Tutorial Assessment ( Int. 20%). On successful completion of the course a student will be able to describe and analyse the important themes in the modern history of Southeast Asia under colonial rule and critically use literature as a source for the more recent history of Southeast Asia.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in a graduate-level (AQF level 8 or AQF level 9) course or permission of the Unit Coordinator.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
