|Description||The key knowledge covered in this unit is how genetic material is organised in the genome and how biological processes are regulated and controlled within cells. Key skills gained are gene analysis and cloning, computer analysis of DNA sequences, and reporting and interpretation of experimental results. The practical applications of molecular biology in medicine, agriculture, and environmental management are emphasised.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. List molecular techniques including DNA cloning, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, DNA restriction and hybridization methods;
2. Describe DNA replication, recombination, mutation and repair;
3. Explain gene expression from DNA to RNA to protein, including how this is regulated;
4. Describe molecular mechanisms of signal transduction.
5. Apply molecular techniques for molecular investigations
6. Interpret and communicate experimental data;
7. Utilize bioinformatics, to obtain and analyse information from molecular databases.
8. Develop new approaches for the investigation of cellular processes in animals, plants and microorganisms.

|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is to deliver content information and develop practical skills through structured and semi-structured learning tasks. The structured tasks are the lectures of which there are three per week. The lectures are recorded and the video recordings are available on the LMS site. There is a textbook assigned to the unit (available from the Bookshop). The semi-structured learning tasks are the lab classes and the computer workshop. In the lab classes, you will gain practical experience in the techniques of molecular biology and how to effectively report and communicate scientific data, all of which is underpinned by the lecture topics. The computer workshops are where you will learn how to extract information from DNA sequences. You will design PCR reactions for amplification of DNA sequences, analyse genes, and use DNA sequences to examine taxonomic relationships between species. You are also encouraged to seek out additional sources of material that are relevant to the unit.|
|Assessment||The objective of the unit material is to develop an understanding of the main concepts and technologies of molecular biology. The understanding of molecular biology theory, and its application in the laboratory will be assessed using different approaches. The assessment of laboratory skills will include (1) two lab assignments (worth 10 % each), and (2) two bioinformatics assignments (worth 5 % each). The assessment of the theoretical component will include (1) five online submissions (worth 4 % each), and (2) a mid-semester test (worth 10 %), and (3) a final examination (worth 40 %).|

|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed BIO316 Molecular Genetics may not take this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
