Genetics and Evolution (BIO356)

Description This unit introduces the disciplines of genetics and evolutionary biology, focusing on eukaryotes. The main aim is to promote an understanding of fundamental genetic concepts and of how populations evolve. Activities will develop conceptual thinking, and analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. The unit underpins a range of other units in the parent majors that involve applications of genetic and evolutionary principles.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, a student should be able to:
1. understand fundamental concepts in eukaryotic genetics and evolution at the level of the genome, cell, individual, population and species and use this understanding to solve related problems;
2. critically discuss a range of issues in eukaryotic genetics and evolutionary biology;
3. analyse and interpret genetic and evolutionary data;
4. report experimental results in a scientific and professional manner;
5. demonstrate time management and independent learning skills.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; practicals/workshop 4 hours per week (includes 1 hour pre-lab) in most weeks.
Unit Learning Experiences Learning in this unit is based on a variety of approaches, including formal classes and self-paced learning exercises. Students will learn fundamental concepts in genetics and evolution through the lecture material. The practicals will comprise hands-on activities that will reinforce concepts that are introduced in the lectures and will develop problem-solving and analytical skills. Students will be able to complete some practical activities as self-directed learning tasks, but optional tutorials will be available for students who prefer to learn in a more structured environment.
Other Learning Experiences Tutorial (voluntary): 1 hour per week in most weeks.
Assessment Assessment will be via participation in practical classes, a report and tests. The participation assessment will facilitate engagement with the practical material and encourage meaningful interactions among students and teaching staff during class. The report will be in the form of a research bulletin, for which students will conduct an experiment, analyse the data and communicate the results to a broad audience. There will be an in-semester test, which will assess 'early' topics, and a final examination, which will focus on subsequent topics. This subdivision will help students to manage their workload throughout the semester. The test will give students an opportunity to assess their performance under examination conditions in advance of the final examination.
Prerequisites BIO152 Cell Biology/Foundations of Cell and Molecular Biology/Foundations of Cell Biology and either MAS183 Statistical Data Analysis and Databases or MAS182 Applied Mathematics or equivalent.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BIO372 Genetics and Evolution may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
