Plant Biosecurity: Detection and Diagnostics (BIO537)

Description This unit will introduce students to the tools and technologies required for effective detection and diagnosis of emergency plant pest and diseases. It includes a comprehensive overview of surveillance and diagnostic methods, with particular emphasis in the following areas: sampling and survey methods, monitoring strategies, and traditional (taxonomy and microscopy) and advanced (molecular and biochemical) diagnostics. This unit will also cover the requirements for certification of diagnostic laboratories and diagnostic protocols, decision making tools and reporting networks/databases.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. design appropriate surveillance strategies and select suitable monitoring tools,
2. conduct triage diagnoses,
3. choose the most appropriate test and understand the application of that test for particular emergency plant pests,
4. implement appropriate reporting procedures.
Timetabled Learning Activities This course is delivered online.
Unit Learning Experiences As this unit is delivered entirely online no attendance at lectures or workshops is required however you are expected to commit at least 10 hours per week to working through the modules, preparing assessments and reading additional material. Attendance at the end of semester exam in compulsory, however this may be taken at an approved venue in your State.
Assessment You will be assessed on the basis of a surveillance exercise worth 25% (1500 words), four triage diagnoses worth 25% (1000 words) and a 1500 word essay worth 20%. Your final exam is worth 30%. All assignments should be submitted electronically. It is recognised that you are likely to be in full-time employment and, particularly in the biosecurity field, emergency situations can arise at any time and so pull you away from study commitments. If such a situation arises, contact the unit coordinator as soon as is possible so that alternative arrangements can be made.
Prerequisites Enrolment in a graduate-level course. Students who wish to enrol in this unit as 'not for award' will be considered on a case by case basis.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
