Transition to Nursing Studies (BNR100)
|Description||This unit introduces students to the nursing profession, university culture, and the inherent requirements of nursing. Skills associated with academic writing, critical thinking, researching, referencing, and professional language will be explored and practised. Students will examine concepts around verbal and non-verbal communication and develop interviewing skills. Numeracy, health information and communication technology will be applied in a health care context, and students will have opportunities to develop the skills and attitudes required for independent and lifelong learning, and professional practice.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Describe the requirements and expectations of university and the nursing profession, and what it means to be a health care professional.
2. Understand and apply critical thinking and other academic skills in university learning and professional practice.
3. Identify and apply appropriate research, referencing, structure and content in academic writing and presentations.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of professional communication in therapeutic relationships, nursing assessment and interviewing, professional development, and interdisciplinary communication.
5. Apply numeracy and literacy in the health care context.
6. Use developing independent and lifelong learning and skills.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||2 hour on campus assessment|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit engages students in self-paced learning supported by online lectures and learning activities. Learning activities are designed to facilitate critical thinking, reflection, and peer discussion using the online forum. Online discussion is encouraged to promote collaboration, peer support, and reflective learning. The unit is divided into twelve modules, each providing a short overview of the topic, learning outcomes, tutorial activities, and direction to reading and other online resources.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Lectures: 1 hour per week pre-recorded and available through the web unit on the learning management system (LMS)and 9 hours of online learning activities and assessment per week|
|Assessment||The assessment components of this unit include a written referencing assessment, an online multiple choice and short answer assessment, and an e-porfolio record of weekly learning activities. Assessment is used to provide opportunity for students to gain knowledge and demonstrate understanding, and to develop analytical, evaluation, critical reflection and other academic skills that are required for success at university. Assessments will provide opportunities for students to apply theoretical concepts and research evidence to practice, and develop written communication skills. Additionally, assessments will introduce students to university and professional requirements and expectations, and allow them to develop academic, professional, and lifelong learning skills. Feedback will be provided on assessments to facilitate student learning and achievement of unit learning outcome.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Bachelor of Nursing.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed a Foundation Unit (units beginning with FDN) may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
