Health and Human Behaviour (BNR150)
|Description||This unit explores human health behaviour theory and research from a range of interdisciplinary and cultural perspectives. It examines topics that include health psychology across the lifespan, health behaviours, self-management, health promotion, behaviour change, illness prevention, and mental health first aid. Concepts of self-concept, sexuality, spirituality, stress and coping, dealing with loss and grief, and substance dependence will also be investigated from a variety of perspectives and will prepare students for evidence based practice in diverse health professional roles.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Describe, analyse and apply health psychology in health care practice.
2. Apply selected health promotion, psychology and behaviour change concepts to a specific area of interdisciplinary health care practice.
3. Examine the influences on students' own health behaviours and identify appropriate self-management strategies to promote health and wellbeing.
4. Understand and support others when dealing with issues of substance use, self-concept, sexuality, spirituality, stress, coping, loss and grief.
5. Identify and apply current research and evidence based practice that is underpinned by health psychology.
6. Further develop academic and professional communication skills.

|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit engages students in self-directed learning supported by online lectures and learning activities. Learning activities are designed to facilitate critical thinking, reflection, and peer discussion using the online discussion forum. Online discussion is encouraged to promote collaboration, peer support, and reflective learning. The unit is divided into ten modules, each providing a short overview of the topic, learning outcomes, learning activities, and direction to reading and other online resources.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Lectures: 1 hour per week pre-recorded and available through the web unit on the learning management system (LMS) and 9 hours of online learning activities per week.|
|Assessment||The assessment components of this unit include a written reflective assessment, an online multiple choice and short answer assessment and an e-portfolio record of weekly learning activities. Assessment in this unit is used to provide opportunity for students to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, analysis, evaluation skills, collaborative skills, critical reflection, and application of theoretical concepts and research evidence to practice. Additionally, these assessments allow students to further develop academic and professional communication skills. Feedback will be provided on assessments to facilitate student learning and achievement of unit learning outcomes.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
