Clinical Practice 5 Research Perspectives (BNR359)

|Description||This unit is the fifth of eight clinical practice units that includes three weeks of on-campus intensive study followed by two weeks clinical placement, which will contribute 80 hours towards the required total of integrated workplace learning hours for the course. Using the principles of inquiry-based learning, students will examine clinical policies and guidelines to understand how current research affects evidence based nursing practice within an acute medical, surgical, mental health, community health, paediatrics, maternity or operating theatre context.|
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lecture: 3 x 2-hours; tutorials: 6 x 2-hours; clinical placement: 80 hours over a 2-week period; simulation: 4 hours over a 1-week period.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit incorporates structured timetabled learning during two intensive study periods during the week prior to clinical placement and in the week after clinical placement. The purpose of the intensive study period prior to placement is to review and explore the principals of evidence-based care. Whilst on clinical placement students will identify a relevant clinical policy and analyse the evidence to support the policy. During the placement the students will present their final report and make a presentation to their peers on their findings. Learning objectives, required readings, relevant websites, reference articles (provided on ECMS) and key concepts will be provided for each module. Power point presentations for each lecture will be available on the LMS prior to each session. Students are encouraged to download these and bring them to the lecture. It is expected that students will complete the necessary readings prior to attending each session. Tutorials will provide students with the opportunity to clarify and further explore concepts discussed in lectures. The tutorial sessions will be interactive and it is expected that students will work in groups during tutorial sessions. This unit will develop critical thinking skills, the ability to apply theory and concepts and will encourage independent research skills.
In addition, this unit incorporates 96 hours of supported placement. This involves 8 hours of pre placement clinical simulation, 80 hours of clinical placement (plus 4 hours of clinical portfolio completion) and 4 hours of post placement brief. The 80 hours of clinical placement will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate a level of competence commensurate with the knowledge and experience of a semester 5 nursing student in each domain of the NMBA Standards for the Registered Nurse (2016). Each component of the placement must be completed. Non-completion of any component may impact on progression through the course.

|Assessment||The assessment components of this unit include one written report, an oral presentation and the completion of the School of Health Professions Student Clinical Portfolio. Detailed feedback is provided on both the reports and the oral presentation to facilitate student learning and achievement of all unit learning outcomes.
The Clinical Portfolio will provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and demonstrate understanding, and to develop critical reflection and other academic skills that are required for success within a clinical placement. Informal feedback is provided to the student by the Clinical Nurse Facilitator on a regular basis during the two week placement, in addition formal feedback is provide to the student through the summative assessment at the completion of the placement.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
