Description This unit will help students to develop knowledge and skills for finding creative solutions to problems and for successful innovation. Students will learn the benefits of adopting and applying diverse perspectives and problem-solving tools, especially within interdisciplinary teams, to find better ideas and products. Examples of creative and innovative thinking will be taken from a broad spectrum of disciplines, including science, engineering, the environment, media, ethics, business and indigenous culture.
Unit Learning Outcomes On the completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of:
1. The range of knowledges and skills required to achieve successful innovation
2. The range of knowledges and skills required for effective creative collaboration
3. Theoretical and disciplinary approaches to understanding creativity and innovation
On completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate the following skills effectively:
4. How to work collaboratively with specialists from other disciplines to solve complex problems ethically using CPS process.
5. Creative competency and how to encourage the development of creative dispositions
6. How to use a range of creative thinking tools to generate ideas
On completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate confidence and competence in applying knowledge and skills to practice by:
7. Providing effective solutions that show a capacity for self-directed independent enquiry and an ability to work to a brief, critical self-reflection, proficiency with generating and refining ideas, and an appreciation of cultural and disciplinary diversity.
8. Using interpersonal and collaborative skills to question, listen and act ethically; tolerate ambiguity, embrace openness, curiosity and intellectual risk taking; to make connections and work effectively within team environments to communicate effectively, to respect the thoughts and opinions of others and to manage time and resources efficiently.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour; workshops: 2 hours.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
Unit Learning Experiences All students are required to attend one 2-hour workshop where you will be expected to work individually and in multi-disciplinary teams. You are expected to listen, view and read all preparatory materials and to make notes that you will be able to draw upon for class discussion and for your assignments. All preparatory materials will be available on Moodle and students who are enrolled externally will be expected to contribute to other discussion on a weekly basis.
Assessment Students will receive weekly feedback from peers and tutors, as well as timely feedback on all assessment tasks.
Poster, Essay or Presentation - worth 30%; Problem-solving Tasks and Teamwork - worth 20%; Oral Presentation - worth 10%; Collaboration, Product/Model, Exposition - worth a total of 40%.
Prerequisites Nil.
Notes This is a University-Wide Breadth Unit.
Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
