Principles of Management (BUS145)

Description This unit provides an introduction to the discipline and practices of management. Weekly workshops assist in generic skill development for business research, writing, analysis and oral presentations. Exercises, feedback and discussion in a supportive group environment emphasise techniques to develop individual skill acquisition and provide opportunities to experience how management practices operate within organisations. Weekly lectures will address topics such as business ethics, planning, decision making, contemporary management challenges, leadership, motivation, and approaches to control.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 2 hours per week.
Assessment Case Analysis: Individual Analysis 10%
Group Case Report: Group Report - 3000 words - 20% (Internal), (40% External)
Case Oral Presentation & Handout: Group (10% Internal)
Multi-source Evaluation: Peer reviews & activity records (10% Internal)
Examination 50 %
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BUS176 Foundations of Management and Governance may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
