Organisation Development and Human Resources Management (BUS240)
|Description||This unit aims to explore organisation development which is a process that applies a broad range of behavioural science knowledge and practices to help organisations build their capacity to change and to achieve greater effectiveness. This includes increased financial performance, customer satisfaction, and organisation member engagement.
Students will be taught how organisations diagnose opportunities and problems, how to understand the need for change and how this can be implemented at the organisational, group and individual levels.
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of Organisational Development concepts and their role in an organisation.
LO2 Demonstrate a practical understanding of the major concepts, theories and models of change and Organisational Development contributing to organisational effectiveness.
LO3 Explain and demonstrate organisational and human process change/ Organisational Development strategies that can be implemented to analyse and solve management problems and maintain employee motivation.
LO4 Integrate advanced understanding of a contemporary body of knowledge in change management to operate as a skilled professional
LO5 Interact effectively with others in order to work towards a common outcome
LO6 Apply the relevant Organisational Development analytical framework(s) leading to the development of solutions to resolve organisational problems.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 2 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is via a weekly lecture and a weekly workshop. The lecture will also be available on the University's lecture capture system, Echo. During each two-hour workshop, students will be expected to participate in group discussions, engage in debate and demonstrate their understanding of OD and HRM principles. As potential managers, the expectation is that students will treat each workshop as if they were employees attending and/or facilitating a professional development session. Because group learning is integral to the unit, for sessions 7-12 ,one group each week will convey the findings of their group assignment via a facilitation of not less than 60 minutes.|
|Assessment||* Individual Assignment: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the major concepts, theories and models of change, OD and HRM.
* Group Assignment: Students will apply the relevant OD and HRM interventions and diagnostic tools leading to the development of solutions to resolve organisational problems. Students will be required to convey the content of the group's written case study analysis in order to demonstrate their ability to work to a professional standard and to their being an effective team member.
* The final examination reviews all lecture and workshop content and allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the major concepts, theories and models of change, OD and HRM contributing to organisational effectiveness.
|Prerequisites||BUS145 Principles of Management or BUS176 Foundations of Management and Governance.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed BUS298 Organisation Development and Change may not enrol in this unit for credit.|
|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
