Chinese Business (BUS243)
|Description||This unit will provide an introduction for students to the broad context in which Chinese business operates, and will address the general history, philosophy, cultural and management issues related to Chinese business, including the concept of guanxi. Topics include a brief history of the evolution of Chinese business; its environment; understanding of the nature of multinational, transnational and small businesses; business leadership; motivation; human resource management; ethics and social responsibility issues; and future challenges in managing Chinese business.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Upon successful completion of the unit students will be able to demonstrate:
1. A concise knowledge about Chinese business culture.
2. A critical awareness of the lessons of success and failures of foreign companies that have ventured into China.
3. Familiarity with the Chinese hierarchical structures, its decision-making and approval processes and officialdom.
4. Knowledge about the Chinese Joint Venture and other business related legislations impacting upon Chinese Business Enterprise Development.
5. Awareness of the principles of trust and interpersonal relations that lay the foundations for the ultimate success of business ventures in China.
6. Communication skills for presenting clear and coherent expositions of knowledge, ideas and evidence, both orally and in writing
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 2 hours; tutorials: 1 hour.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self-directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.|
|Assessment||Mid-Term Test 15%
Final Exam 50%
|Notes||No knowledge of Chinese language is required.|
|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
