Strategic Management (BUS317)

Description This is a capstone unit which is aimed at preparing students to think strategically, and to look at all the issues and problems affecting the strategic initiatives of an organisation, from a total corporate perspective. The unit provides a conceptual framework of corporate strategy and policy formulation, and integrates the key functional areas for business including, organisational learning, innovation, knowledge management, marketing, finance and human resource management for strategic decision making.
Unit Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
o apply the principles of corporate governance and understand the roles and responsibilities of the board in assessing senior management
o apply environmental analysis tools and evaluate the results of that application for organisations
o evaluate the corporate value chain
o manage the process of strategy formulation
o assess organisational strategic leadership
o describe the role of organisational culture and knowledge in implementation
o work effectively in a group, applying the tools and principles used in this course to critically 'analyse a situation' and formulate a course of action with 'long-term corporate consequences' (Wheelen and Hunger 2004 p342).
o -demonstrate the ability to review a company's competitive context and logically argue a position
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshop: 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The focus of this unit is for the student to become well-versed in the process of strategic management. To this end, there is a strong focus on modelling and application. Theory will be outlined in the lectures and the workshops will be used to model the application of theory in the real-world through the use of video cases. Students will then apply the relevant concepts in their assignments.
Assessment A significant component of the assessment is group-based project. This project is composed of a presentation (15%) and a report (25%). This project, a form of work-integrated learning, pertains to the construction of a strategy for a listed firm. The project is self-directed. The rest of the marks are allocated to an individual essay (20%) and a 2 hour final exam (40%). Students will obtain feedback on how well they are able to grasp and apply the relevant concepts as they progress through the scaffolded assessments.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
