Fundamentals of Chemistry (CHE140)

|Description||This unit introduces fundamental concepts that prepare students for subsequent study in chemistry and support further study in a range of majors. Students learn about the nature of matter at the molecular level. This involves learning language, symbols and representations used to describe matter and chemical reactions. Students develop skills in problem solving and calculations related to chemical quantities, processes and reactions.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Describe the nature of matter at the atomic and molecular level using appropriate language, symbols and representations.
2. Use chemical equations to describe chemical reactions.
3. Carry out calculations related to chemical quantities, processes and reactions.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Introductory lecture: 1 hour in Week 1 (optional); Laboratory classes: 4 hours per week for 5 weeks; optional Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS): 1 hour per week.
Up to 3 days intensive laboratory activities for external students.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is presented as a series of sequential modules. Content is delivered online using a range of tools (interactive and independent learning activities, recorded lectures, forums for questions and answers) in combination with a structured programme of reading and exercises from a customised textbook. Each module has a detailed learning guide that outlines the learning activities for the module. The module learning guides also give the recommended sequence for doing the learning activities. Students work through the modules independently and support is provided through clinic sessions. Laboratory classes consist of a combination of structured learning activities and experiments that facilitate development of understanding of particular fundamental chemistry concepts.|

To encourage learning on a consistent basis throughout the teaching period, a proportion of the assessment weighting is allocated to engagement with online learning activities (Mastering Chemistry). Assessment of laboratory classes is based on participation in the structured and experimental learning activities designed for each class. The online quizzes provide ongoing assessment at intervals throughout the teaching period. Students can view their quiz results to see where they are doing well and the concepts they need to study further. The final exam assesses recall of conceptual knowledge as well as problem solving skills. All unit learning outcomes are assessed in the quizzes and final exam.
|Prerequisites||Knowledge of chemistry to the level of Year 10 (fourth year of WA secondary school) or equivalent and reasonable grounding in basic mathematics are assumed.|
|Exclusions||Students with a final scaled score of 50% or higher in Chemistry ATAR (WACE Chemistry 3A/3B) within the past three years may be excluded from the unit. Students who have successfully completed CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry/PEC144 Chemical Principles may not enrol in this unit for credit. Students who have successfully completed PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry or OSCI18 Introduction to/Fundamentals of Chemistry cannot enrol for credit in this unit.|
|Notes||Completion of this unit will enable students to enrol in CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
