Physical Chemistry I (CHE202)

|Description||This unit builds on a basic understanding of chemical principles to show the practical investigative uses of thermodynamics and kinetics. In addition, it introduces molecular orbital concepts of structure and reaction mechanisms. The concepts of ionic strength, activity, redox, complexation, speciation, solubility and membrane equilibria are discussed and applied to practical situations, including biochemical systems. MO theory of planar molecules and simple reactions including Lewis acid/base and SN2.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Analyse and interpret theoretical and practical data in the framework of thermodynamic and kinetic principles
2. Recognise standard kinetic models and explain some standard mechanisms
3. Develop skills with the numerical MO models
4. Develop writing and reporting skills
5. Provide a framework for the development of the fundamental knowledge into an industrial context.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 3 x 1 hour per week; laboratories: 1 x 4 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning within this unit is an integrated one. Content delivery is intimately tied to actual practising how to apply the concepts in practice with 'lectures' being a combination of traditional delivery and workshop. The application/examination of the conceptual material is also carried through to the practical laboratory classes where students will develop essential laboratory skills and develop their ability to probe specific questions in a rigorous scientific manner. Students will be expected to engage and utilise relevant scientific literature when building arguments to support their interpretations/explanations of the data they collect.|
|Assessment||The assessment in the unit is designed to provide both support for the development of essential knowledge and communication skills, and to test how well students understand and can apply the thermodynamic and kinetic concepts discussed. Typically, assessment will include data interpretation and laboratory reports (40 %), written assignments (20 %), and a final examination (40 %).|
|Prerequisites||CHE144 Foundations of Chemical Principles AND CHE145 Introduction to Chemical Concepts.
For students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Secondary Chemistry, the prerequisite is CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry.
|Notes||Up to 5 days intensive laboratory activities for external students.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
