Physical Chemistry II (CHE347)

Description This unit will further develop the chemical kinetic and thermodynamic principles covered in Physical Chemistry I with a specific focus on applications in solution chemistry.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Develop chemical kinetic studies to examine a number of practical situations.
2. Understand the thermodynamics of phase equilibria and apply phase diagrams to separation and production processes.
3. Understand the redox chemistry of electrolyte systems and develop an understanding of charge transfer reactions at electrodes and other surfaces.
4. Take personal, professional and social responsibility by demonstrating a capacity for working responsibly and safely.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 3 hours per week;
Laboratories: Internal: If numbers permit : 1 x 4 hours per week for 11 weeks of the semester
If insufficient numbers, internal students will attend the same labs as external students.
External: Up to 5 days intensive laboratory activitiesents.
Unit Learning Experiences The lectures will involve a combination of traditional lecture presentations and interactive learning activities. Weekly laboratory sessions will involve students conducting experiments. Workshop activities will be made available online for external students to work through independently. External students will attend campus for an intensive period of laboratory activities that cannot be provided online. The assignments that form part of the assessment structure are actually learning activities to incentivise engagement with the unit material on a consistent basis throughout the semester. Completion of the assignments will form part of your overall study plan outside of timetabled learning activities.
Other Learning Experiences External students will be required to attend a compulsory 5-day on-campus laboratory session.
Assessment Physical chemistry is best understood through experience in the laboratory. The laboratory will focus on key aspects of physical chemistry and will be assessed through report writing (short form and long form). The laboratories in this unit are important to understanding the content, and therefore are worth a large proportion of the final grade. They aid in exam preparation, along with assignments. The final examination assesses integration and application of all concepts covered in the unit.

Exclusions Students who have successfully completed both CHE201/PEC201 Thermodynamics and CHE247/PEC247 Chemical Processes cannot enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
