Clinical Radiology (CHI440)

Description This unit is designed to build on previous years' knowledge and training. It is exclusively focussed on radiology. It is designed to focus on the radiological presentations of the musculoskeletal disorders not covered in year 3, plus chest and abdominal plain radiographic imaging, and completes the diagnostic topics for radiologic interpretation. Practical lab time will be used to further develop skills in image interpretation, building on your knowledge of normal radiographic anatomy and basic film interpretation techniques from prior years.
Unit Learning Outcomes ULO1: Demonstrate an understanding of radiographic anatomy which distinguishes between normal and abnormal conditions on radiographic, CT, MRI, and DUS images.
ULO2: Apply accurate descriptive terminology, including anatomical location.
ULO3: Discuss the underlying pathology of imaging presentations.
ULO4: Analyse clinical and imaging information to develop diagnoses.
ULO5: Integrate epidemiology when developing differential diagnoses.
ULO6: Demonstrate a practical understanding of the role various types of imaging play in assessing patients.
ULO7: Utilize accepted guidelines to produce medicolegal quality radiology reports.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 3 hours per week; Practical: 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Lecture content of weekly topics is delivered face-to-face or online with the opportunity to discuss components of the content and ask questions. All lecture powerpoint presentations are made available to students in Moodle prior to lectures, should students choose to preview lectures to assist in their preparation for class time. These presentations are also made available throughout the teaching period to allow for later review or to access during practical sessions. Example theory and practical examination questions are made available on Moodle for assessment preparation. Lectures are supported by smaller group practical sessions which provide students with an environment to develop and practice their interpretive skills related to the weekly topics, further re-enforcing their understanding and knowledge of the topics presented in lectures. The practical session is designed to allow students opportunities to review a variety of cases in a self-directed format, with radiologists available to answer individual questions; additional self-directed study of adjunct videos presenting selected cases from the weekly practical sessions is encouraged. These videos are provided on LMS and cover findings, search patterns, differential diagnoses, and appropriate terminology to use when describing and diagnosing imaging cases. In addition to an assigned radiology report writing assignment, other report writing opportunities may be integrated into the practical sessions where time allows. Lectures, practical sessions, and self-directed activities encourage active participation, face-to-face contact and purposeful, engaging activities related to weekly topics, and assist in the development of communication skills, critical and creative thinking, social interaction, independent and lifelong learning, interdisciplinarity, and in-depth knowledge of a field of study
Other Learning Experiences On-line materials and practical review videos
Assessment Final theory exam: assesses didactic content and uses case scenarios requiring clinical/imaging integration and decision-making. Practical assessments: assess student's knowledge and skills in identifying, discussing, and differentiating relevant conditions, using precise anatomical terminology when localizing abnormalities; given in a timed, written response format. X-ray report writing: students learn to document interpretive skills in a clinically relevant format, in preparation for 5th year reporting requirements. Lines of mensuration self-study assignment: Students are provided with a practical activity to learn how to apply imaging-related measurement systems in various clinical scenarios.
Formative assessments: Students assess a case and present their findings and differential diagnosis during practical sessions; used to enhance skills and give direct feedback on how well students are grasping concepts.
Prerequisites Enrolment in Chiropractic Science + Clinical Chiropractic (BSc, BClinChiro), and successful completion of Years 1 to 3, or permission of the Unit Coordinator.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
