Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy II (CHI449)

|Description||Focus on the development, implementation and recording of an evidence-based biopsychosocial rehabilitation program for neuromusculoskeletal diagnoses of the upper and lower limbs. It takes the competencies developed in performing physical examination procedures for differential diagnosis and builds on those for the purpose of assessing the neuromusculoskeletal system, functional capacity and quality of life. Provides instruction on the indications, and safe and effective use of a range of physical therapy modalities.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand current pain science and be able to communicate this to people in order to facilitate behaviour change to improve the likelihood of a successful rehabilitation intervention
2.Understand the terminology and principles specific to physiological therapeutics and physical modalities, including thermal, acoustic, electrical, light, and mechanical modalities
3. Understand and apply the modality best suited for the presenting patients complaint and justify the choice from an evidence-based framework
4. Apply these physical modalities safely and effectively to assist the body in healing
5. Understand, create and evaluate the assessment, design, application, monitoring / modification and communication of a patient centred intervention which is in accord with the biopsychosocial model for a person with a musculoskeletal diagnosis of the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, wrist/hand or ankle.
6. Understand and apply the use of a number of conceptual rehabilitation approaches such as motor control, strength, end range loading and general re-activation to move the patient from passive to active care
7. Understand and evaluate various upper and/or lower limb presentations for when a case is outside their scope of practice and know when to refer for co-management, a second opinion or further specialist help
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 2 hours per week; Laboratory: 2 hours per week.|

|Assessment||In order to pass this unit the student is required to demonstrate a theoretical understanding of rehabilitation principles and a practical demonstration of the aforementioned 'hands-on' techniques and their communication skills. Murdoch University graduate clinical competencies are in accordance with our accreditation requirements. These clinical competencies are in the workshops and is monitored throughout practical sessions on a regular basis.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in Chiropractic Science + Clinical Chiropractic (BSc, BClinChiro), and successful completion of Years 1 to 4, or permission of the Unit Coordinator.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
