Introduction to Communication (CMS100)

Description CMS100 is a foundational unit in Communication and Media Studies. It introduces students to the fundamental principles of communication. The unit covers perception and identity in communication, as well as the fields of mass communication, communication in the social media, professional, intercultural, interpersonal, and group communication. It also familiarises students with the main approaches and key concepts of Communication Studies. In addition, the unit contains practical communication skills.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. analyse and interpret mass media messages in the communication process;
2. recognize the main issues to be aware of in professional communication;
3. grasp the elementary theoretical underpinnings of Communication Studies;
4. employ critical tools in the interpretation of complex verbal and nonverbal texts;
5. creatively employ professional communication skills in listening, oral presentation, reading academic writing, written argumentation, and team work.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1.5 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences CMS100 requires students to attend a one hour lecture and a one and a half hour tutorial per week (or equivalent online discussions for external students), which amounts to a total of two and half hours per week. Furthermore, students are expected to spend an additional 8 hours per week on engaging with the weekly required readings, reviewing lecture notes, as well as preparing for and completing each of the assessment tasks.
Assessment The four assessment components are designed to test student comprehension of the principles of communication, as well as their application. Online multiple-choice questions in Week Four (15%) ask students to identify and define core concepts with reference to various forms of communication. Ongoing tutorial exercises (20%) will assess students' professional communication skills in listening, oral communication, and team work, including in their presentations. The research essay (35%) evaluates student performance in data collection, concept application, cogency and persuasiveness of argument, and writing skills. The final two hours examination by multiple-choice questions and short answer questions (30%) assesses the students' understanding of the key concepts and major theories of Communication Studies.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
