Introduction to Media Studies (CMS101)

Description This unit introduces students to foundational concepts and theories relevant to the study of media. Media is understood as a global discourse that is traditional and contemporary, incorporating historical and new perspectives. We explore the role media plays in shaping institutions, identities and legal and ethical positions. Students will have opportunities to think critically about these issues via mixed modes of assessment.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Explain the key principles that underpin the discipline of media studies;
2. Define, explain and apply key concepts and theories in the study of media texts;
3. Identify and critically evaluate theoretical approaches in the field of media studies;
4. Apply your learning to your own experiences of traditional and new media;
5. Synthesise, evaluate and utilise information from a range of sources, especially library journal databases;
6. Formulate an argument, structured with relevant theoretical sources and examples, using an essay format; and,
7. Identify, articulate and justify potential lines of research and/or production in Communication and Media Studies that you would like to pursue in the future.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1.5 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit uses a structured timetable as a framework for learning. Students are required to attend a 1 hour lecture and a 1.5 hour tutorial for 11 weeks of the semester. One tutorial will be conducted in workshop-style to assist students with their major assignment. In addition to timetabled activities, students are expected to spend 7.5 hours per week on comprehending the weekly required readings, reviewing lecture notes, preparing for and completing each of the assessment tasks including weekly tutorial questions, assignments and the weekly test.
Assessment Four main assessments: A Critical Literature Review, Essay, Weekly In-class Tests and Tutorial Participation.
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MCC108 Introduction to Communication and Media may not enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
