Critical Topics in Communication and Media Studies (CMS306)

|Description||CMS306 is designed as a final year research project for Communication and Media Studies students. The first part of the unit introduces students to a range of critical theories and concepts, as well as research tools and methods that are applicable to the study of communication and media. In the second part of the unit, these theories and tools are applied to a contemporary topic or task, working in small teams to a brief provided by and external industry partner.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students are expected to be able to:
1. Choose an appropriate theory or method to carry out research, and apply this theory or approach.
2. Critically evaluate the application of research theories and approaches.
3. Work to an external industry partner briefing.
4. Concisely write a report, campaign proposal or consultancy document using applied research.
5. Present on a research project utilising conventions of oral and visual communication.
6. Reflect upon critical evaluation of work from others, including peers, educators and/or industry assessors, into a personal evaluation of their research project.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour/week for 6 weeks; Workshops 2 hours/week for 12 weeks.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||During lectures and workshops students will acquire practical knowledge in both applied research and basic research from a variety of communications and media studies theory perspectives. Individual researcher case studies and methodological approaches will be presented by guest lecturers, sharing their particular research expertise.
Within workshops students will work within small teams to develop their research project/grant application. Peer evaluation and structured feedback forms an integral part of the unit learning experience. Audio-visual content and other interactive online content will be available as part of blended and self-directed learning activities.

Students engage in three specific assessments/learning strategies. Firstly, based on an industry partner briefing, students discuss their applied research proposal in small groups throughout the unit, where they receive and give peer feedback. This activity contributes to their tutorial participation grade. Secondly, students develop a team-written media/communications research proposal, based on a methodology covered in the unit, working to the industry partner's brief. Thirdly, students write an individual, reflective report from their peer and industry partner feedback, considering the strengths and weaknesses of their proposal.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
