Stories of Doing Community Work (COD201)

Description Community development is used in a variety of contexts by many different groups. This unit provides an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of settings and areas of practice within community development in contemporary Australia. It examines the important part that story has in both shaping practice and methodologies. Students will gain skills and experience in describing and critically reflecting upon practical examples of community development in practice. They will learn skills to help with the preparation of funding applications.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit:
1. Students will be contribute to weekly online discussions related to the range of contextual factors that shape different forms of community work.
2. Students will be able to critically appraise at least 7 different stories of community work, understanding the ways in which legislation and policy, audience, institutional context, history and practice form impacts on community work.
3. Students will be able to prepare a funding proposal to support a community-based project.
4. Students will be able to carry out desk-top research and write an annotated bibliography designed to review the importance of story in community development.
Students will be able to write an essay demonstrating their understanding of community work in a range of different settings.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops: 9 x 2 hour lectures, 9 x 1 hour tutorials. Some guest lectures from community development practitioners.
Unit Learning Experiences Like other community development units, the learning approach adopted is shaped by inductive traditions of learning. In other words students are invited to observe examples of social policy (through online, digital video and written examples of current policy) and invited to draw out learning, ideas and concepts through discussion, reflection and observation. Students have access to recorded lectures, discussion forums and other online learning resources related to social policy
Other Learning Experiences Written Assignments, reading, viewing practice examples and reflection on community development practice.

The assessments is designed to build student understanding of the diversity of settings within which they may work, and to provide students with the opportunity to develop practical research and writing skills applicable to the community sector.
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed COD235 Community Work across Sites, Settings and Peoples may not enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
