Social, Games and Mobile Media (COM201)

|Description||This unit will focus on the rapid rise and cross-platform integration of social media, mobile media and games. Will consider exponential growth of social networking, hand-held media interfaces, and game platforms over the past decade, and critically explore their convergence in everyday cultural practice. Students will be introduced to key approaches and concepts in the study of contemporary media culture and communication, and have the opportunity to gain an understanding of contemporary media production through a transmedia assessment task.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
* ULO1: Understand the evolution and contemporary significance of social, games and mobile media in terms of their impact on socio-cultural practices.
* ULO2: Analyse, synthesise and apply key concepts and theoretical perspectives relevant to social, games and mobile media studies.
* ULO3: Think, talk and write critically about the influence of social media platforms, mobile interfaces and games on contemporary culture, and the media environment more broadly.
* ULO4: Demonstrate critical, creative and technical skills through production of a short mobile movie that addresses one or more key issues relating to social, games and/or mobile media
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1.5 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit uses a structured timetable as a framework for learning. Students are required to attend a 1 hour lecture and a 1.5 hour tutorial for 11 weeks of the semester. One tutorial will be conducted in workshop style to assist students with their major assignment. In addition to timetabled activities, students are expected to spend 7.5 hours per week on comprehending the weekly required readings, reviewing lecture notes, preparing for and completing each of the assessment tasks including the concepts test, research essays and transmedia project.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
