Description Being a counsellor is a lifelong process of learning, professional and personal growth. The aims of this unit are to expand students' knowledge of the field of counselling skills, and introduce students to major theoretical frameworks for understanding human nature and causes of human distress, with particular attention on relational approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. This unit is a thorough introduction to the practice of counselling and the basis for all other coursework in the programs.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Describe what the profession of Counselling is (and is not);
2. Discuss the core abilities relevant to successful Counselling relationships;
3. Demonstrate competence in core Counselling abilities in the context of supervised peer-practice;
4. Demonstrate an ability to reflect upon and articulate your own subjective experience in relation to the Counselling process;
5. Describe your own emerging orientation to Counselling, the theoretical and philosophical frameworks, any research evidence pertaining to this conceptualization, and how it fits with major Counselling models.

Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is based on both theoretical and applied learning and will involve direct lecture-style teaching, experiential learning in class, case-based learning, and group-based activities which foster integrated learning. In addition, students will practice core counselling skills hands-on during tutorials
Assessment Students will complete a group presentation, a reflective learning journal, and a written critique of a 30 minute counselling session with a peer. They are provided with detailed feedback on their written work as well as feedback from peers, tutors and the lecturers throughout the course.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Counselling or Master of Counselling or permission of the Counselling Academic Chair.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
